Olympiads

WHAT Olympiads are all about?

In different countries all over the world there are world championships for the students of school in the subjects Mathematics and Science.
Some of the important Olympiads are:

•  IMO -The International Mathematical Olympiad

•  IPhO -The International Physics Olympiad

•  IChO -The International Chemistry Olympiad

•  IBO -The International Biology Olympiad

•  IOI -The International Olympiad in Informatics

•  IAO -The International Astronomy Olympiad

Mathematical Olympiads

For these exams all over the world the countries are divided into 25 regions. There are four stages:

Stage 1 : RMO i.e. Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)

RMO for which class 11 students are eligible is a 3 hour written exam comprising of 6 to 7 problems. The performance in RMO is the base on which selection to next stage depends.

Stage 2 : INMO i.e. Indian National Mathematical Olympiad

INMO is organised every year in the month of January and on the 3rd Sunday of the same month in all the regions. Candidates who clear stage 1 become eligible for stage Stage again is a written test for 4 hours and merit certificate is awarded to top 75 candidates.

Stage 3 : IMOTC i.e. International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp

At this stage only top 30 to 35 certificate holders are given an invitation to come for a training camp of the duration one month. This camp is organized in the month of may or june every year.

Stage 4 : IMO i.e. International Mathematical Olympiad

Out of the 30-35 members of stage 3 only six are selected for forth stage who are accompanied by a leader as well as a deputy leader who represent India at this level. This test is usually organised in the month of July every year in a country which is chosen for IMO. The test at this level is conducted for two days in continuity, the duration of which is four-and-a-half hour. The same six candidate are also the ones who qualify automatically for KVPY Fellowship i.e. Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana.

PHYSICS and CHEMISTRY OLYMPIADS

Stage I :

The first stage is NSE i.e. National Standard Examination in Physics and Chemistry NSEs are usually held in the month of November in the last week at a large number of centres in all over country. Students who have cleared class 12 are not eligible to appear for the exam and rest all below class 12 can appear for the same. In accordance with the schedule of exams any student can appear for more than one Olympiad.

Stage II :

The second stage is INOE i.e. Indian National Olympiad Examinations

For INOP the top 200 to 250 students from whole country are selected from each Physics and Chemistry exam at stage 1. These selected students then appear for INPhO i.e. Physics exam and INChO i.e. Chemistry exam respectively. These exams are usually held either in the end of January or the early February. Out of the 200-250 students about 50 students are selected in each subject at stage 2.

Stage III :

The third stage is OCSC i.e. Orientation cum Selection Camp

The selected 35 students are invited for OCSC at HBSCE and on the basis of their performance at the third stage the top 20 students are selected from each subject who are then awarded a merit certificate along with a set of books. A sum of Rs. 5,000 is awarded in form of cash and books to top 5 students in Physics and top 4 students in Chemistry. Also some special prizes in each subject which are awrded to the meritorious performances in various experiments and theories.

Stage IV :

The fourth stage is Training of Indian Teams for International Olympiads

At this stage the selected Indian teams undergo a rigorous training program at HBCSE in theory and experiment.

Stage V :

The fifth stage is Participation in International Olympiads

At this stage there is a team of 5-member student team, 2 teacher leaders and one scientific observer who makes the delegation to represent India at the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO); and there is a team of 4-member student team, 2 teacher leaders and one scientific observer who constitute the delegation to represent India at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO)

ASTRONOMY OLYMPIADS

Stage I :

The first stage is NSE i.e. National Standard Examination (NSE)

A student of class 9 is eligible for junior level and a student from class 10 or 11 is eligible for senior level. Comprehension of the subject is the main emphases of NSE and not the rote memory.

Stage II :

The second stage is INOE i.e. Indian National Olympiad Examinations

For INOP the top 200 to 250 students from whole country are selected from Astronomy exam at stage 1. These selected students then appear for INAO i.e. Astronomy Exam. These exams are usually held either in the end of January or the early February. Out of the 200-250 students about 50 students are selected in each subject at stage 2. The difficulty level of exam paper is usually high and arenon conventional questions and problems.

Stage III :

The third stage is OCSC i.e. Orientation cum Selection Camp

The selected 25 students in both senior and junior levels are invited for OCSC at HBSCE and on the basis of their performance at the third stage the top 20 students are selected from each subject who are then awarded a merit certificate along with a set of books. A sum of Rs. 5,000 is awarded in form of cash and books to top 3 students in junior category and top 2 students in senior category. Also some special prizes in each subject which are awarded to the meritorious performances in various experiments and theories. These 5 students become eligible to represent India on the next level.

Stage IV :

The fourth stage is Training of Indian Teams for International Olympiads At this stage the selected Indian teams undergo a rigorous training program at HBCSE in theory and experiment.

Stage V :

The fifth stage is Participation in International Olympiads At this stage there is a team of 5-member student team, 2 teacher leaders and one scientific observer who makes the delegation to represent India at the International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO).
